When I picked my projects last December, I managed to pick some challenging ones. Not because the designs were difficult, but because they were old and there were a number of issues as a result of that. This one was no different.
I bought this kit from an elderly lady. When I opened it, I immediately spotted a number of problems: a rusty needle had left its marks on the linen; the chart was cut to fit an A4 (the left and right sides of the design were missing); there was no image in the kit, except for a really small one that provided little information on the missing parts; the thick lines dividing the chart did so every 6 stitches rather than every 5 (demanding a readjustment of my counting habits); and there was an extra symbol with threads on the colour card that I could not find anywhere on the design - not even when I cleaned my glasses.
After weighing my options I decided that this old kit deserved to be stitched. I used some Dr. Beckmann on the rust stains and washed the linen. It solved that problem, but the age of the fabric showed: it was pretty fragile. Yet I hate to waste linen of such a good weave, so I decided to stick with it.
I started my stitching by hand, but because of the state of the linen I couldn't pull my stitches very tight. After a while it became clear that I needed to use a hoop if I wanted to keep a relatively neat look. I used a 6" embroidery hoop. It caused some trepidation every time I had to readjust, because I could feel that pulling the fabric too tight would cause it to tear over the edges of the hoop. Thank goodness that never happened.
Still there was only so much tension that I could keep on the fabric and as a result my cross stitches were rather loose. It was acceptable looking considering the fragility of the fabric, but I was starting to feel a dread I never felt until I started the butterfly series. And lo and behold: I ran out of my first two colours.
I contacted Thea Gouverneur, who were kind to help. I also ask them about the extra colour on the colour card and they told me that I got my hands on something special: this kit was at least over 45 years old! The colour was removed from the chart and apparently something had gone wrong around that time - it was far too long ago for them to reconstruct, though.
That sealed the deal for me and I was determined to finish this ancient kit, albeit with proper care and the acceptance that I was going to run out of colours again because I couldn't pull the stitches tight. To prevent it from turning into a UFO, I set the goal of having it finished before the official start of Spring. And I succeeded!
I did run out of thread twice more. Even a third time, if you count the fact that I had to use the additional red colour on my colour chart to substitute the original red colour of the word Winter.
There was some other confusion, though. Because the chart was cut on both sides, I had to revert to the - very! - small image of the design within the kit to see what stitches were missing on the chart. Then I noticed some weird gaps in the chart around the pine needles. Some of the needles were erased from the chart, but rather haphazardly. A few needles seemed to be floating.
What's a little more squinting then, huh? I filled in all the missing needles with the help of the tiny image. You can see the difference here:
There was also a mistake in the chart concerning the letter E in "Winter", but that was easy to fix based on the image that came with the kit.
Because this is such an old kit and because I do not know what its modern counterpart is like, I will not judge this design on the issues described above. I think it was a nice insight in the development of charts and I am thankful for Thea Gouverneur's helpful replies on the matter.
Now about the design itself: it is stunning! Holly, pine, and larch are amongst my favourite trees and I associate them with cold long nights of snow outside and the warmth of friends and family inside. It was a joy to stitch.
Thea Gouverneur uses DMC threads, so the quality was still very good despite its age. The linen was of a great weave, although it had clearly suffered from being stowed away for all those decades. I'm positive it will survive a few more decades, though, framed and put behind glass.
I am not certain yet whether I will stitch the other three designs in this series or not. I do like to complete a series. But perhaps I will try my hand at the bell pull that incorporates all four seasons instead.

Toen ik mijn projecten uitkoos afgelopen december, is het me gelukt om een aantal zeer uitdagende uit te zoeken. Niet omdat de ontwerpen zo ingewikkeld zijn, maar omdat ze erg oud zijn en als gevolg daarvan een aantal problemen gaven. Deze was geen uitzondering.
Ik heb dit pakket overgekocht van een oudere dame. Toen ik hem openmaakte, zag ik meteen een aantal problemen: een roestige naald had vlekken achtergelaten op het linnen; het patroon was verknipt tot A4-formaat (de linker- en rechterkanten van het ontwerp misten); er zat geen afbeelding in het pakket, behalve een heel kleine die me weinig informatie gaf over de missende delen'; de dikke lijnen die het patroon verdelen waren verdikt om de 6 steken in plaats van de 5 (waardoor ik mijn telgewoontes moest aanpassen); en er was een extra symbool met draden op de kleurenkaart die ik nergens anders op het patroon kon vinden - zelfs toen nadat ik mijn bril had schoongemaakt.
Nadat ik de mogelijkheden tegen elkaar had afgewogen, besloot ik dat dit oude pakket het verdiende om geborduurd te worden. Ik heb wat Dr. Beckmann op de roestvlekken gebruikt en het linnen gewassen. Dat loste dat probleem op, maar de ouderdom van de stof werd zichtbaar: het was best wel fragiel. Ik vind het echter zonde om linnen van zo'n goede weefkwaliteit weg te gooien, dus ik besloot hem toch te gebruiken.
Ik begon met borduren in de hand, maar door de staat waarin het linnen verkeerde, kon ik de steken niet strak aantrekken. Het werd al gauw duidelijk dat ik een borduurring moest gebruiken om de steken netjes te houden. Ik heb een borduurring van 15 centimeter gebruikt. Het zorgde voor flink wat spanning elke keer dat ik de hoepel moest verplaatsen, want ik kon voelen dat de stof zou scheuren langs de randen van de ring als ik hem te strak aantrok. Gelukkig is dat nooit gebeurd.
Toch kon ik daardoor maar een bepaalde hoeveelheid spanning op de stof zetten en als gevolg daarvan waren mijn kruissteken vrij losjes. Het zag er nog acceptabel uit met inachtneming van de fragiliteit van de stof, maar ik begon een vrees te voelen die ik nog nooit had gevoeld tot ik begon met de vlinderserie. En wis en waarachtig: de eerste twee kleuren draad raakten op.
Ik contacteerde Thea Gouverneur en zij waren erg behulpzaam. Ik heb hen ook gevraagd naar de extra kleur op de kleurenkaart en ze vertelden mij dat ik iets speciaals in handen had: dit pakket was minstens 45 jaar oud! De kleur was van het patroon gehaald en blijkbaar was er toendertijd iets mis gegaan - het was echter veel te lang geleden voor hen om te reconstrueren.
Dat versterkte alleen maar mijn vastbeslotenheid om dit oude pakket te borduren, al zij het met grote voorzichtigheid en de acceptatie dat ik nog meer garen tekort zou komen, omdat ik de steken niet strak kon trekken.
Om te voorkomen dat dit pakket in een UFO zou veranderen, gaf ik mezelf tot doel dat ik het af wilde hebben voor de officiële start van de lente. En dat is me gelukt!
Ik kwam nog twee keer garen tekort. Zelfs een derde keer, als je meetelt dat ik de extra rode kleur op mijn kleurenkaart heb moeten gebruiken om de originele rood van het woord Winter te vervangen.
Er was nog iets anders dat verwarring bracht. Omdat het patroon aan twee kanten was afgeknipt, moest ik het - heel! - kleine afbeeldinkje gebruiken dat bij het pakket kwam om te zien welke steken misten op het patroon. Toen viel me op dat er een paar vreemde gaten op het patroon zaten bij de dennennaalden. Sommige naalden waren verwijderd van het patroon, maar een beetje onzorgvuldig. Een paar naalden leken te zweven.
Wat is een beetje extra getuur dan nog? Ik heb de missende naalden ingevuld met de hulp van het kleine afbeeldinkje. Je kunt het verschil hier zien:
Er was nog een foutje op het patroon met betrekking tot de letter E in "Winter" maar dat was gemakkelijk op te lossen met behulp van de afbeelding die bij het pakket zat.
Omdat het zo'n oud pakket is en ik geen idee heeft hoe zijn moderne tegenhanger eruit ziet, wil ik geen oordeel vellen over dit ontwerp op basis van de problemen hierboven beschreven.

Nu over het ontwerp zelf: het is prachtig! Hulst, den en lariks zijn enkele van mijn favoriete bomen en ik associeer ze met lange koude nachten met sneeuw buiten en de warmte van vrienden en familie binnen. Het was een groot plezier om te borduren.
Thea Gouverneur gebruikt DMC-garen, dus de kwaliteit was nog steeds erg goed, ondanks de ouderdom. Het linnen was goede weefkwaliteit, hoewel het duidelijk te lijden heeft gehad van enkele decennia weggestopt te zijn geweest. Ik ben er desondanks van overtuigd dat het nog wel een paar decennia langer zal overleven, omlijst en achter glas gestopt.
Ik weet nog niet of ik de andere drie ontwerpen in deze serie wil borduren. Ik houd er wel van om series compleet te maken. Maar misschien dat ik in plaats daarvan een poging ga wagen aan het schellekoord dat alle vier seizoenen incorporeert.
